How national law firm is helping staff after a tough 18 months

Law firm Howes Percival is giving staff an extended August Bank Holiday as a thank you for their hard work during the pandemic.

The firm, which has offices in Cambridge, Leicester, Manchester, Milton Keynes, Northampton and Norwich, will close them all on Tuesday August 31, for what it is calling a “wellbeing day”.

Chairman Geraint Davies said the day complimented other initiatives supporting its staff, including flexible and hybrid working, career break opportunities, emotional resilience training and even on-line pilates.

The company also offers other employee assistance programmes including access to a 24/7 online GP as well as mental, physical and financial health support.

Mr Davies said: "The Covid pandemic has created unprecedented changes to both people's working and home lives.

“We've not only had to cope with the anxiety and isolation caused by the pandemic itself, but concerns for our loved ones, and the stresses of adapting to remote working and home-schooling.

“Everyone has been working hard, and at times, it's been a struggle to get that work/life balance, especially as people's homes became their workplaces.

"The pandemic created some extraordinary challenges.

“During the first lockdown we moved entirely to remote working and developed new virtual forums to work together, to provide training and welfare support, and to help staff stay safe and feel connected.

“For example, in response to staff feedback, we introduced extended lunchbreaks, more flexible working, and created a range of virtual socials including ‘Coffee and Connect', ‘Fun Friday' drinks, quizzes, a book club and walking/exercise challenges.

"Our staff are our most important resource and we believe it is vital to look after their wellbeing. We've worked with our team over the years to develop a support package that suits the way we work and the culture at Howes Percival, as well as helping to provide physical and mental health support.

“But, in recognition of the exceptional 17 months we've been through, we have decided to give everyone an extra day off in addition to their normal holiday entitlement – to help them relax and recharge their batteries."

The firm provides legal services to corporate and private clients including Government departments, international brands, and household names such as Ford Retail, Persimmon Homes, Anchor Hanover Group and FTSE listed pub operator Marston's.
