How much your train, tram and bus fares are rising by in the New Year

New Year, new travel fares for commuters across Greater Manchester... and, as in previous years, there's little in the way of good news.

Travellers in the region who depend on trains, trams and buses to get to work and get about will all face digging that little bit deeper from January.

On the railways, passengers face train fare increases of almost three per cent.

First announced in August, the price hike in effect means commuter fares have increased by more than 10 per cent since 2016.

Season ticket prices are set based on the July inflation figures, which showed the Retail Price Index (RPI) was 2.8 per cent.

It meant train companies were able to raise prices by up to that amount.

A Liverpool to Manchester season ticket, by any route, is set to rise by a huge £73, from £2,620  to £2,693.

An annual season ticket from Wigan North Western to Manchester Piccadilly railway station today costs £1,192.

Analysis by the M.E.N. after the announcement shows that price could jump by £33 to £1,225.

An annual season ticket from Rochdale to stations in Manchester city centre could go up from £1,192 to £1,225, while one from Altrincham could increase from £1,072 to £1,102.

The cost of travel from Bolton to Manchester's stations could be set to rise by £29 to £1,081, with a potential rise of £21 to £757 for travelling from Stockport to Manchester Oxford Road.

AJ Bell personal finance analyst Laura Suter offered some tips - but traveller will have to be quick.

She said: "To beat the hikes you can buy your season ticket in 2019 and pay this year's prices, but that's not an option if you've still got time left on your current ticket.

"You could also make use of your employer's season ticket loan scheme, to cut the cost, or put the season ticket on a 0% interest credit card to spread the cost across 12 months, meaning you don't have to start the new year by forking out thousands of pounds in one go."

Metrolink, meanwhile, will increase its fares in the New Year - though the price of some tickets will stay the same.

The cost of single journeys, which represent just under half of all tickets sold across the network, will be frozen at 2019 prices, with Metrolink saying the other 50 per cent of tickets will increase by four per cent or less.

The rest will see a price rise of 10p.

Metrolink said that on average, the changes mean fares will rise at a below-inflation rate of 2.2 per cent across the board.

Manchester's bus network (MEN)

Passengers will be able to buy cheaper 'early bird' tickets and travel card bundles.

And an 'early bird' offer, which had been successfully trialled last year, will be made a permanent fixture on the network.

Transport for Greater Manchester said it had encouraged people to leave their cars at home and travel earlier in the day, helping to spread demand during Metrolink's busiest period.

A 'carnet' ticket will offer more flexible travel options for less frequent travellers.

And customers will be able to buy a pack of 10 discounted one-day travel passes on the 'Get Me There' smartcard.

On the buses, First said its customers would face fare increases from January 2.

Passengers are being urged to check individual website (PA)

But the cost of a number of on-bus, unlimited travel passes like FirstDay tickets will be frozen.

Normal child discounts will apply.

First said a range of fares including adult singles, mTicket single journey tickets in packets of five and 10 will all go up.

The FirstAnnual mTicket will go up from £648 to £670.

The company urged all passengers to check its website for full details.

Stagecoach said there would be no rise on all single journey fares.

But seven-day, 28-day and Xtra tickets will be going up from Sunday, January 5.

An adult Manchester dayrider ticket will cost £5, with an adult seven-day megarider ticket costing £16.50.

Stagecoach said there are also some new route and area specific fares for 2020, including some services in Wigan and Middleton.
