How much your shopping has risen as food prices soar up to 31 per cent in the last year

Families already under the strain of soaring energy bills are also feeling the pain each time they visit the supermarket.

New data from the Office of National Statistics has shown that the average of basket of groceries has risen by 4.2% in the year to December 2021.

So if you usually spend £50, you will now be spending £52.10.

However, this is just the average, with the figure masking some foods rocketing by more than seven times that.

Meat and fish, dairy and some fruit and vegetables are particularly hard hit, with minced beef costing £1.30 more per kilo, spreadable butter 34p more per 500g pack and cauliflowers going up by 16p each compared to the previous year.

Supermarkets know that many shoppers keen a keen eye on everyday essentials so tend to keep prices down on items such as tea bags, milk and bread, but even these have risen by 5p, 3p per pint and 3p respectively.

Although these rises are more modest, most households buy a lot more milk and bread than cauliflowers, so the small rises can add up in the course of a month.

Fruit and veg showed the largest variance in rises, with cooking apples rising by a typical 6p per kilo - or 3% - but the same amount of eating apples jumping in price by nearly 25%, or 47p.

Some of the biggest increases have been been in the cost of fresh meat, with a kilo of roasting beef going from £8.81 to £11.33 - a 29% leap, and lamb chops rising by nearly 9% per kilo in the past year, from average £13.46 to £14.65.

A kilo of minced beef has jumped by 25%, from £5.09 to £6.39.

The biggest overall rise however was margarine, where an average 500g tub has gone up by 31% in the past year, from £1.35 to £1.77.

But it's not all bad news, as the survey found some staples were actually cheaper than a year ago.

Bananas cost an average of 83p a kilo last month, up from 79p in May but 2p less than a year ago.
