How much your council tax bill will go up by this year

Many major councils across the country will impose a five per cent tax bill rise this year.

Taxpayers across the UK face an increase in council tax from April 2021, largely due to the strain of the pandemic.

Of 147 English councils that provide social care that analysed, 93 were planning the maximum 4.99 per cent rise at the time of our research the Mirror has exclusively reported.

According to the Mirror's research, a further six were planning a rise of between 4.90 per cent and 4.98 per cent - making a total of 99 that were planning rises virtually at 5%.

Essex, Lincolnshire, Bury, West Berkshire, and Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole - were planning rises of less than 2 per cent.

No council was planning a rise of less than the 0.7% per cent inflation rate, according to the research.

Councils say they have little choice but to introduce above-inflation rises to make up for the funding gaps from central government.

The Local Government Association said 85 per cent of this year’s 4.5 per cent rise in town hall “core spending power” is coming from council tax rises.

A spokesman said: “This leaves councils facing the tough choice about whether to increase bills to bring in desperately needed funding to protect services at a time when we are acutely aware of the significant burden that could place on some households.

“Council tax rises – particularly the adult social care precept – have never been the solution to the long-term pressures faced by councils, particularly in social care which is desperately in need of reform.”
