How much you can get fined for ignoring the lockdown and if you can be arrested

Boris Johnson imposed extreme new lockdown measures to tackle coronavirus this week, with harsh penalties for the public if they break them.

In unprecedented measures, the Prime Minister announced that the UK was to go into lockdown with people ordered to stay home and only leave the house in a few circumstances in the fight against Covid-19.

Mr Johnson said people are to only leave the house for on shopping for basic necessities, one form of exercise a day, a medical need or travelling to work if absolutely necessary.

Libraries, playgrounds and outdoor gyms and places of worship will also shut with only funerals being allowed to take place - reports Manchester Evening News.

These new measures will be enforced by the police with officers dispersing large gatherings and issuing fines.

The government has said that police could fine people £30 if they ignore the rules and these on the spot charges will be "ramped up" if there is widespread disregard to the latest measures.

There is also the new emergency legislation which was pushed through through the Commons in a single day which gives the government extra powers.

The Coronavirus Bill allows police more powers to arrest and isolate people for public health reasons.

This includes being able to force people with virus symptoms to isolate.

Officers are also able to fine people who refuse to take a coronavirus test £1,000.

A 26-year-old man became the first person in the British Isles to be arrested for failing to self-isolate under new rules against coronavirus.

He was arrested on the Isle of Man for not adhering to the new measures.
