How much Wrexham are paying ex-Man Utd star Ben Foster in wages

Ex-England goalkeeper Ben Foster shocked fans and pundits alike when he announced he was coming out of retirement to join National League side Wrexham until the end of the current campaign.

The 40-year-old retired from football after leaving Watford last season and had turned down a lucrative offer from Newcastle United at the start of the campaign, only adding to the surprise when he announced he was joining the Welsh club last month.

With Wrexham being bankrolled by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, many people assumed Foster’s reasons for joining the club were purely financial. However, Foster has denied this in a recent podcast and instead insists he owes the club after giving him game-time on loan as a youngster.

They are paying him "peanuts", he added.

“I don’t need much [money],” said Foster on his podcast. “To be honest, the negotiations took about five minutes.

“Wages-wise, it’s literally peanuts… the part for me is getting the team over the line and getting them promoted. I'm a very low maintenance player. Just wheel me out, I'll do a job.”

The ex-Manchester United keeper had a spell on loan in north Wales in 2005 and helped the club to lift the Football League Trophy at the-then Millennium Stadium. He’s made four appearances for the Dragons so far and made a crucial penalty save in a top-of-the- table clash against Notts County that has helped put Wrexham within touching distance of promotion.

“The first time I was here, it was genuinely the springboard to the rest of my career – on the back of the loan move, playing in the LDV Vans Trophy Final at the Millennium Stadium, I got my move to Manchester United at the start of the next season," he said. "It was absolutely bonkers

“If you’d told me 18 years ago that I’d have gone on to have the career that I have had, I probably wouldn’t have believed you to be honest so I do owe a lot to Wrexham.”
