How much TV rights and broadcasting are worth to Manchester United

This season marks a watershed for broadcasting Premier League games in the UK, as retail giant Amazon smashes up the duopoly of Sky and BT by staking a claim to screen 20 Premier League matches.

Manchester United will be in the thick of it, with their home matches against Spurs on 4 December and Newcastle on Boxing Day set to be shown on Amazon for the first time.

Although they derive hundreds of millions of pounds from their match-day and commercial activities, United remain reliant on money earned from broadcasters to cover costs and sign players.

As well as from domestic games, the club - typically - earns money from UEFA for European matches, with payments increasing the further the club progresses in the competition.

And United earn further revenues through wholly-owned global television channel, MUTV, which delivers club programming across the world.

Last season, the club earned almost two-fifths of revenues from broadcasting - up from just above a quarter only five seasons ago.

This has been caused in part by the value of broadcasting rights shooting up, especially in the Premier League under the three-year broadcasting cycle beginning in the 2016/17 season.

United also benefited from UEFA's latest three-year broadcasting arrangement that kicked in last season and stretches until 2020/21.
