How much Tottenham really paid Lyon for Tanguy Ndombele revealed

Tottenham broke their transfer record to sign Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon last summer.

And it's fair to say things have not quite worked out how he would have planned so far.

The France midfielder came to north London with a big reputation, having starred in Ligue Un for Lyon last season, just a year after joining permanently from Amiens.

And his Tottenham career got off to a great start, scoring on his debut in a 3-1 win over Aston Villa.

However, things have not quite gone to plan since then, with question marks over his fitness and new head coach Jose Moruinho publicly criticising him.

Mourinho said: "I'm not going to run away and I have to say he has had enough time to come to a different level," he said after taking the Frenchman off the pitch at half-time at Burnley.

"I know the Premier League is difficult, and some players take a long time to adapt to a different league, but a player with his potential has to give us more than he is giving us, especially when you see how Lucas, Lo Celso and those players are playing. I was expecting more in the first half from him."

Ndombele has been linked with a move away from Spurs, with Barcelona and Liverpool reportedly linked with a move, but Tottenham have no intention of selling and Mourinho has been impressed with the work Ndombele has been putting in during lockdown.

The 23-year-old came with a big price tag in the summer, with Spurs breaking their club transfer record to snare him.

Reports suggested there was a £63million deal to sign him, with £54million as the initial figure, rising to £63million with add-ons.

However, that figure does not appear to be quite accurate.

Lyon have announced their financial results for the first nine months of the 2019/20 campaign and it paints a different picture of the Ndombele deal.

In their press release, Lyon say that Ndombele was one of the principal transfers that brought in money, with the Frenchman moving to Spurs for €47.6million.

That figure equates to around £42million at the current rate of exchange and would have been around £42.5million in July, when he signed.

There will of course be add-ons and the true final figure will not be known, but Spurs could indeed have paid considerably less for the midfielder than originally thought.
