How much some of Hearts and Hibs' biggest transfers would be worth in today's market

The amount of money being thrown around in football these days often leads to much debate and discussion.

Players are regularly moving clubs, particularly south of the border, for eight-figure fees without so much as the bat of an eyelid.

However it wasn't always that way, the market has grown beyond belief in recent years.

So looking back at transfer fees in the 1990s and early 2000s was always going to be an interesting activity – and it really does highlight how much things have changed.

Totally Money's Transfer Index, using fees recorded by Transfermarkt, has crunched some numbers to look at what some big transfers down the years would be worth in today's market.

And we at Edinburgh Live thought we would look at five Hearts and five Hibs players, who moved for what would've been termed "big money" back in the day, to see what their deals would be worth in the current climate.

Craig Gordon  - Hearts to Sunderland (2007)

(Sunday Mail)

Fee then - £9,740,000

Today's fee – £25million

The sum paid for Gordon was, at the time, the largest fee ever for a British goalkeeper. His time down south was interrupted by a number of serious injuries and after spending some time out of the game he returned to Scotland to sign for Celtic in 2014.

Steven Fletcher - Hibs to Burnley (2009)

(SNS Group)

Fee then - £4,230,000

Today's fee - £9,758,000

He might not have ended up signing for Real Madrid (remember that?) but he still netted Hibs a decent fee. However he went on to move for an even bigger sum – joining Sunderland for £12 million in 2012. Is currently playing for Sheffield Wednesday.

Gary Naysmith - Hearts to Everton (2000)

(Sunday Mail)

Fee then - £2,360,000

Today's fee - £6,021,368

A key member of the 1998 Scottish Cup winning side. Naysmith spent four years at Hearts, having also come through the ranks at Tynecastle, and made a big impression before leaving for Everton in 2000. Was a key man at Goodison Park for a number of seasons, and was also a regular in the Scotland side throughout the 2000s.

Kevin Harper - Hibs to Derby County (1998)

(Daily Record)

Fee then - £405,000

Today's fee – £1,767,109

The winger was at Easter Road between the start of his career in 1992 and 1998 when he moved to Derby County. Went on to turn out for clubs including Norwich, Portsmouth and Stoke City before returning to Scotland to sign for Dunfermline.  Is now the manager of Albion Rovers.

Allan Johnston - Hearts to Stade Rennais FC (1996)

(Sunday Mail)

Fee then £630,000

Today's fee - £4,600,886

Started his career at Hearts and spent six years at Tynecastle before moving to France in 1996. Has since moved to management and is currently in his second spell as boss at Queen of the South.

Ulises de la Cruz – Hibs to Aston Villa (2002)

(SNS Group)

Fee then £2,430,000

Today's fee - £9,312,637

Was signed by Alex McLeish for a club record fee of £700,000 and went on to net the club a healthy profit. Scored twice in a 2-1 Edinburgh derby victory at Easter Road.

David Weir - Hearts to Everton (1999)

(Daily Record)

Fee then - £270,000

Today's fee – £1,187,072

Probably one of the best defenders Scotland has produced in a long time. He's the country's seventh most capped player of all time, after all. He was in the 1998 Scottish Cup winning side before leaving for Everton the following season.

David Murphy - Hibs to Birmingham City (2008)

(SNS)

Fee then £2,030,000

Today's fee – £5,169,010

Murphy enjoyed an excellent Hibs career between 2004 and 2008 before moving on to Birmingham City where he was a regular fixture at left back as they competed in the Premier League.

Antti Niemi – Hearts to Southampton (2002)

(Daily Record)

Fee then – £2,700,000

Today's fee – £10,347,374

He went on to enjoy a brilliant career in England with spells at Southampton, Fulham and Portsmouth. Niemi spent three years at Hearts having joined from Rangers in 1999.

Michael O'Neill – Hibs to Coventry City (1996)

(Daily Record)

Fee then – £675,000

Today's fee – £4,929,521

O'Neill is best known these days for being the hugely successful Northern Ireland manager, but he was also a bit of a hero at Hibs, turning out around 100 times for the club in the mid 1990s.
