How much Scottish football's biggest transfers would be worth in today's market

You can't blame supporters who believe money in modern football is ruining the beautiful game.

But one things fans might not be factoring into their assessment of the current spending culture is how much inflation has changed the sport at the top level.

Looking back at transfer fees from the 80s and 90s makes it appear like the game has changed beyond recognition but a deeper look at the numbers paints a different picture.

Totally Money's Transfer Index , using fees recorded by Transfermarkt , have crunched the numbers on the biggest deals involving Scottish football and it certainly makes for interesting reading.

Record Sport Online have compiled the the 10 biggest deals using the numbers provided and ranked them in ascending order.

Kieran Tierney - Arsenal to Celtic (2019)

Original fee: £25m

Today's fee: £25m

Kieran Tierney 's move to Arsenal from Celtic hasn't yet had the chance to benefit from inflation but the bumper move will only go up as the years go by. The former Hoops hero is on the verge of making his long-awaited return to first-team action and will be desperate to prove he's worth every penny.

Craig Gordon - Hearts to Sunderland (2007)

Original fee: £9,740,000

Today's fee: £25m

Roy Keane made a transfer splash when he landed Craig Gordon in a then record goalkeeper fee for a British team in the transfer market. The former Jambos standout produced some brilliant moments but injuries curtailed his five-year stay on Wearside before he beat the injury bug and got back to his best with Celtic.

David Hopkin - Crystal Palace to Leeds United (1997)

(Birmingham Post and Mail)

Original fee: £4.4m

Today's fee: £25,414,618

A surprise entry. Hopkin wasn't regarded as one of Scottish football's finest exports to English football but the combative midfielder enjoyed a storied spell with Crystal Palace before earning his big move to Leeds United. A stint with Bradford City followed in 2000 after making 80 appearances for the Elland Road side.

Don Hutchinson - Liverpool to West Ham United (1994)

(Daily Mirror)

Original fee: £2,030,00

Today's fee: £28,863,548

A gem for the Scotland. Hutchinson was arguably Scotland's most influential player during Craig Brown's final years in charge of the national team. The attacking midfielder didn't set the world alight during his first spell at Upton Park but impressed at Everton before earning a second chance with the Hammers in 2001.

Alan Hutton - Rangers to Tottenham (2008)

(PA)

Original fee: £11.7m

Today's fee: £29,791,832

It's easy to forget how good the rampaging right-back was at Rangers. Walter Smith's side started the 2007/08 season like a runaway train and Hutton's blistering play gave the Ibrox side an added dimension. Juande Ramos, feeling the heat at Tottenham, sanctioned a big-money move for the Scotland international. Hutton never quite managed to replicate his Rangers form at White Hart Lane but has managed to forge a solid career south of the border, becoming a fans’ favourite at Villa Park before his exit earlier this year.

Christian Dailly - Derby to Blackburn Rovers (1998)

Original fee: £7.16m

Today's fee: £31,240,735

Current Scotland boss Steve Clarke would probably walk the West Highland Way barefoot if he had the chance to land a £30m-plus central defender for the national team. Dailly's season at Ewood Park was an unmitigated disaster as Rovers were relegated a few short years after winning the Premier League. But the no-nonsense defender rebounded and became a mainstay at international level and an integral member of a strong West Ham team.

Steven Fletcher - Wolves to Sunderland (2012)

Original fee: £13,680,000

Today's fee: £36,651,428

He's not everyone's cup of tea but Steven Fletcher had enjoyed a career to remember in English football. The striker, currently with Sheffield Wednesday, has accounted for more than £64m in transfer fees - factoring in inflation - during his career. His biggest move was in 2012 when Sunderland stumped up some serious cash to bring Fletcher to the Stadium of Light. The former Hibs forward enjoyed a strong start but netted just 12 times in his final three seasons on Wearside. He’s still banging them in for Sheffield Wednesday of course.

Barry Ferguson - Rangers to Blackburn Rovers (2003)

Original fee: £8,780,000

Today's fee: £36,882,612

Graeme Souness loved everything about the Rangers skipper and moved heaven and earth to bring the Scotland star to the Premier League in 2003. Ferguson made an instant impact but a knee injury and a desire to head home led to his Ibrox return in 2005. Rovers certainly missed the pass master, with many observers believing the Scotland star was the man who made their side tick during his spell at the club.

Duncan Ferguson - Everton to Newcastle United (1998)

(Press Association)

Original fee: £9,630,000

Today's fee: £42,017,916

There are few players more revered in Everton's history than Big Dunc. The imposing striker was a smash-hit with the Toffees and there was plenty of tears shed when big-spending Newcastle United made their move in 1998. Ferguson enjoyed a strong second season at St James’ Park but the pull of Everton proved too strong to resist as he made an emotional return to his spiritual home in 2000.

Duncan Ferguson - Rangers to Everton (1994)

Original fee: £5,490,000

Today's fee: £78,059,547

A 1-2 finish for Ferguson. Everton spent big to bring the striker to Goodison Park in 1994 after the storm that followed his assault on Jock McStay. His start at Goodison wasn't straightforward as he served three months in jail over the McStay incident and a hernia issue also caused him to miss time. Accounting for inflation, Ferguson would be one of the most expensive players in history if his transfer from Rangers happened today.
