In 2010 the retiring chief secretary of the treasury left his successor a note that said “I’m afraid there is no money”. How much will the present chief secretary be leaving?

• Congratulations on sneaking in a Randy Newman quote as a heading, (Oh Baltimore, ain’t it hard just to live, 29 April). I’ve always thought the Tories could adopt his My Life Is Good as an anthem, given Newman’s arrogant, swaggering narration.
