How much money Man Utd chiefs made despite club crashing out Champions League

Manchester United club bosses will pocket £50million from the team's Champions League exploits this season, despite the club receiving a footballing lesson during their elimination by Barcelona .

United were dumped out of Europe following a 4-0 aggregate defeat to Barca last week, but that hasn't stopped them from earning an astronomical sum off the back of a mediocre campaign.

Old Trafford bosses will bank around £35million on account of their share of the market pool for European TV rights.

On top of which, the games against Juventus , Paris Saint-Germain and Barca added roughly another £15million to the final tally, with ticket sales and hospitality from sold-out games at Old Trafford also adding up to top up the £50million sum.

A United insider said: “The games we played this season in the competition really did capture the imagination – both on and off the field.

Were Man Utd wrong to appoint Ole Gunnar Solskjaer before the end of the season?

"It’s obviously a big amount of cash the club have earned but, as previously demonstrated it doesn’t really have a fatal impact if we aren’t in the Champions League.

"[That was] proved when we signed Paul Pogba [for £89m in 2016].”

United were comprehensively beaten 4-0 by Everton in the Premier League on Sunday, landing an untimely blow to their hopes of returning to Europe's premier competition next season.

Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: "We were beaten on all aspects today and the only place we beat Everton - I can't say we beat them - but we had a fantastic support.

"I just want to apologise for the performance we turned out."

The defeat came five years almost to the day since a 2-0 loss of Goodison Park cost ex-boss David Moyes his job as United manager.

The board moved to remove Moyes after defeat to the Toffees confirmed that they would not be able to qualify for the Champions League for the following season.
