How much money Chelsea will earn by beating Liverpool in the UEFA Super Cup

Chelsea will earn €4.5m (£4.2m) in prize money alone tonight if they are able to beat Liverpool in the 2019 UEFA Super Cup.

The Blues will earn €3.5m just for turning up tonight's fixture in Istanbul; an extra €1m is on the table for the victor.

Held every year in a different European city, the UEFA Super Cup pits the winner of the 2018/19 Champions League against the winner of the 2018/19 Europa League.

The prize money is not insignificant to Chelsea, who earned a reported €40m in UEFA prize money last season after beating Arsenal to win their second Europa League trophy in six years.

By contrast, Liverpool took home roughly €110m by beating Tottenham Hotspur and winning their sixth European cup, evidence of the disparity in prize money between the two competitions.

Chelsea are looking to lift Super Cup for the first time since 1998, when as holders of the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup they beat Champions League winners Real Madrid, in the first Super Cup match to be played in its current format: a one-off tie in a neutral venue.

The Blues previously played consecutive Super Cup matches in 2012 and 2013 after winning the Champions League and Europa League in successive years: both matches ended in defeat for Chelsea.

History will be made tonight regardless of the result as French official Stéphanie Frappart becomes the first woman to referee the final of a UEFA men's competition.

Meanwhile, the much-discussed video assistant referee - commonly known as VAR - will be used for the first time in the UEFA Super Cup.
