How much large protest in Nottingham city centre cost to police

A large protest which brought Nottingham city centre to a standstill in August cost around £30,000 to police.

Hundreds of people from two opposing protest groups arrived in the city and clashed just off Old Market Square, with barriers around the Brian Clough statue preventing them meeting.

It began outside the BBC Island on Saturday, August 22.

Protesters marched from London Road down Canal Street, up Maid Marian Way, past the Royal Centre and down towards the Brian Clough statue.

The police helicopter also circled the city and police formed barricades to stop two groups from clashing.

Nottinghamshire Live  submitted a Freedom of Information request to Nottinghamshire Police to find out how much the protest cost the force to police.

Police said the event cost an estimated £30,000 to police and 150 officers and staff were involved in the planning and event itself.

A police spokesperson added: "The force sought assistance for an additional 50 officers from other Forces under our normal mutual aid processes.

"Around 100 officers were involved on the day of the event. Normal policing across the force was not affected by the protest due to the planning of our response."
