How much it costs you to keep an electric fan running all night

Retailers are expecting fan sales to soar over the next week as the mercury hits 31-degrees in cities across the UK.

B&Q is predicting a 300% uplift in sales of cooling units, while Currys says sales could soar 200% over the next few days.

But while the cool air may be tempting too help you sleep, or even necessary, have you ever stopped to think what the cost of running a fan all night is?

Auto energy switching service Migrate reckons almost half the population use electric fans to help them stay cool during the hot, summer nights.

Their figures show, overall, that means electric fans add £1.7million a day to UK energy bills.

But on an individual level things are far more reasonable - with the typical electric fan costing just 7.2p to run for 8 hours.

This is worked out based on the output of a typical fan (70W) with the average unit cost for electricity being around 13p.

Of course, if you don't want to use a fan - or discover you can't get one - there are other ways to stay cool.

Other methods of avoiding restless nights include opening a bedroom window, sleeping without bedcovers, sleeping in separate beds, freezing or filling a hot water bottle with ice water, and switching to a lower tog rated duvet.

How to keep cool at night

  • Take a cold shower before bed

  • Keep bedroom blinds and curtains closed during the day to block out the sun

  • Use a spray bottle filled with cold water for a cooling mist on demand

  • Create a DIY air conditioner by putting a bowl of ice in front of a fan

  • Chill a pair of socks in the fridge and putting them on before bed

George Chalmers at auto-switching service Migrate, said: "Homes in the UK aren't necessarily built for the hot weather - air conditioning doesn't come as standard and they’re increasingly well insulated. So, while the hot weather signals BBQ’s and beer gardens, it also means sleepless nights.

"While some of the tips for getting a good night’s sleep during a heatwave are more unusual than other, the humble electric fan is still one of the most common solutions to combating the heat, and at a cost of 7p a night it’s likely a price that many are willing to pay.

"However, if you’re worried about how costs could add up throughout the summer, migrating your supplier could save you £315 a year, that’s enough money to run an electric fan every night for the next 14 years."
