How much it costs to keep an electric fan on all night as Ireland sizzles in heatwave

The Irish heatwave is set to continue this week, according to forecasters - but how much does it cost to keep a fan on all night if you're struggling to keep cool?

Met Eireann is predicting temperatures could soar to 30C in some parts of the country as the heat shows no sign of going away just yet.

Met Eireann forecaster Liz Walsh told the Irish Mirror there’s a weather warning in place until Friday.

She said: “Temperatures will still be in the mid to low 20s. It will be a little cooler but it’s not going to go directly from high 20s to mid-teens. It’ll be a gradual decline.”

While on Sunday, it was the warmest day of the year with temperatures hitting 29 degrees in Athenry, Co Galway.

It was the hottest day ever in Northern Ireland last Saturday with 31.2C recorded in Ballywatticock, in County Down.

While the heat is great news for those making the most of summer, the sweltering weather could spell bad news for our electricity bills.

Some Irish people use electric fans to help them stay cool during the hot, summer nights.

This means electric fans are adding costs each day to Irish energy bills.

On an individual level things are fairly reasonable - with the typical electric fan costing just 11c to run for 8 hours or across the pond in the UK, 7p.

This is worked out based on the output of a typical fan (70W) with the average unit cost for electricity being around 20c.

Of course, if you don't want to use a fan - or discover you can't get one - there are other ways to stay cool.

Other methods of avoiding restless nights include opening a bedroom window, sleeping without bedcovers, sleeping in separate beds, freezing or filling a hot water bottle with ice water, and switching to a lower tog rated duvet.

  • Take a cold shower before bed

  • Keep bedroom blinds and curtains closed during the day to block out the sun

  • Use a spray bottle filled with cold water for a cooling mist on demand

  • Create a DIY air conditioner by putting a bowl of ice in front of a fan

  • Chill a pair of socks in the fridge and putting them on before bed
