How much is food going up in price?

The latest inflation figures show the price of food is continuing to rise.

In the year to January, food prices rose by 4.3%, according to the figures from the Office for National Statistics.

That was up from a rise of 4.2% in the year to December, and is the biggest annual increase since May 2013.

Overall Consumer Prices Index (CPI) rose by 5.5% in the 12 months to January 2022, up from 5.4% in December 2021.

Among the food items growing fastest in price are margarine - up by 37.2% in a year, pasta and couscous, up 14.9%, jams, marmalades and honey, up 13.6%, yoghurt, up 12.4%, and lamb, up 12.3%.

In terms of prices that means the average 500g tub of margarine cost £1.27 in January last year, but £1.84 this year.

A kg of dessert apples has gone up from £1.89 to £2.41, a beef roasting joint is up from £9.34 per kg to £11.59 per kg, while lamb loin chops or steaks rose from £13.33 a kg to £14.71.
