How much did Tiger Woods' Masters win cost bookies? Betting industry hit on double after Tiger Roll's success

Tiger Woods' incredible Masters victory over the weekend cost the betting industry a jaw-dropping €25million.

Woods, 43, completed one of the greatest sporting comebacks in history by triumphing at Augusta to win his first major in 11 years.

The success came just eight days after Tiger Roll's second consecutive Grand National win at Aintree cleaned out the bookies, costing them around €290million.

Davy Russell's winning ride on the legendary nine-year-old, trained by Gordon Elliott and owned by Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary, was one of the worst results in Grand National history for firms.

Lucky punter wins €80,000 off Tiger Woods and Tiger Roll double

And numerous punters were celebrating on the double on Sunday night after backing both Tigers to roar.  The double cost the betting industry "well into the six-figures".

Almost 800 people backed it with Paddy Power, with one punter claiming "a significant five figure payout" after backing Tiger Roll at 9/2 and Woods at 14/1.

A spokesperson for the firm said: "Tiger's breathtaking comeback alone over the weekend cost the bookmarking industry in the region of €25m. His roar is still ringing in our ears - but not as loudly as the tills in our shops after Sunday's evening's epic performance."

Big debate: Is Tiger Woods' Masters triumph the greatest sporting comeback of all-time?

Ladbrokes' Nicola McGeady added: "We offered a special Tiger double which paid out at 66/1. Naturally it proved pretty popular with all the dreamers!"

Meanwhile, one Irish punter scooped a massive €80,000 after placing €1,000 on the double.

Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports said: “One customer alone is €80,000 richer after investing €1,000 on the two winners which, although popular with customers, we just didn’t see happening as both events are so hard to win.”

He added: “To come back and win the Grand National for the second time was a stunning achievement for Tiger Roll, but Tiger Woods’ Augusta heroics capped off one of sport’s greatest ever comebacks and it’s one we’re going to remember for quite some time for more reason than one.”

If you fancy the double being repeated in 2020, you can get it at odds of 98/1 with some bookies.
