How much cinema tickets cost in Wales depending on which company you use and where you go

There’s been a lot of attention lately on the cost of a trip to the cinema in Wales , which seems to vary wildly depending on where you are.

Now the summer holidays are here and the Welsh weather has taken a turn for the worse , an afternoon at the cinema might seem like an appealing option.

If you are a family of four, that could cost you more than £30 in Newport , but just £19 in the centre of Cardiff . It pays to shop around in the Welsh capital though, because if you head to Nantgarw, the same film at the same time will cost £28 if there are four of you.

The stormy weather makes it ideal to see the latest film releases, like The Lion King (Daily Record)

Yet, even though there are some significant differences between some cinemas, many of the big names have fallen into line after the public backlash over the differences cinema-goers were having to shell out.

Big name Odeon was blasted for charging cinema-goers in Llanelli nearly double compared to Swansea , which is only 30 minutes down the road.

Vue came under fire too for charging film fans more than double to see the latest blockbusters in Carmarthen.

Odeon and Vue now offer fairly consistent prices for their films, whether you happen to be in Llanelli, Swansea or Cardiff.

This is a summary of exactly what you can expect to pay at each of the big name companies, as well as some of the best independent cinemas across Wales.

Odeon Cinemas

At all Odeon cinemas in Wales - Cardiff, Swansea , Bridgend, Lllanelli and Wrexham - standard seating costs just a fiver , for all ages.

There are premier seating options at all cinemas, and if you choose this option, it will set you back £6 in Cardiff and £7 in Bridgend.

Vue Cinemas

There are five Vue cinemas in Wales, and they are all similarly priced across the board.

Standard/saver seating at Cardiff, Carmarthen, Cwmbran, Swansea and Rhyl will cost you £4.99 .

In Merthyr, you have to pay an extra pound for standard seating at peak times.

Cineworld

Cineworld Newport is a pricey place to watch a film (Cineworld, Newport)

Cineworld is where the big differences kick in.

In Cardiff, adults and kids pay £5.20 to watch a film. In Newport however, at both Friars Walk and Spytty Park, adults have to pay a whopping £10.90 and kids £8.40 . That's more than double.

Premiere

There is only one Premiere cinema in Wales - in Cardiff. It is one of the cheapest places to catch a film, charging £4 for a standard ticket, £3 for students and £3.50 each for a family of four.

Showcase

Located north of Cardiff at Nantgarw, the Showcase cinema is pricier than most, offering cinema tickets at £8.95 for adults and £6.95 for children.

Seniors and students are a bit cheaper, at £7.55 .
