How much Celtic lost in Europa League cash after Braga loss

Celtic lost out on UEFA prize money last night following their disappointing Europa League defeat to Braga.

Brendan Rodgers' side went down 2-0 to the struggling Portuguese outfit on home soil, with goals in either half.

The Hoops looked to have levelled through Kelechi Iheanacho in the second - only for the strike to be chalked off for handball after a lengthy VAR check.

It wasn't to be for the Scottish Premiership champions, as they huffed and puffed throughout, but ultimately, didn't show enough quality in or out of possession to merit any kind of positive result on matchday two of the competition.

The team were greeted by boos by the home faithful (those who remained until the final whistle), as supporters vented their frustration at yet another damaging result in Europe.

No only was it damaging in footballing terms, with Celtic sitting on just one point after two games against Braga and Red Star Belgrade.

But last night's loss also meant Celtic earned zilch in terms of prize money on offer from UEFA.

That's because in the league phase of this season's Europa League, for every win a team records, £389,000 will be paid out by European football's governing body.

And for a draw, they will award teams £130,000.

In this scenario, Braga claimed the full amount of prize money, with the Parkhead club taking home zero.

Celtic's next Europa League fixture comes on October 23 later this month, when they will host Sturm Graz, who defeated Rangers 2-1 in Austria last night.
