How much are Ireland's biggest political parties spending on Facebook advertising?

The Green Party put themselves back on the political map despite spending significantly less on social media advertising than their rivals.

The party spent €683 on Facebook advertising since March - a figure dwarfed by the spend of the other major parties in the run up to the local and European elections.

Underdog European candidate Ciaran Cuffe spent less than €100 in during his campaign.

It appears candidates are also using Facebook to a greater extent to appeal to voters, as they know that the majority of the Irish public use the social media site.

Which party forks out the most on ads?

Fine Gael are the biggest spenders on adverts, with the party spending a whopping €9,952 since March 1 this year.

This spending echoes the , with Mark Durkan and Frances Fitzgerald splashing out €3,402 between them from 1 March and 20 May.

Adverts on Leo Varadkar's page has also amounted to €6,624 since March this year.

Fianna Fail are the next biggest spenders, just behind their rivals with a total of €8,383 spent in the same period.

There is no info for advert spend on leader Micheal Martin, but European candidate Barry Andrews spent €781 during his campaign.

There is then a big drop off to third-highest spenders Labour, who have spent €3,130 since March.

Their leader Brendan Howlin does not have a Facebook page to advertise on.

Sinn Fein have splashed €2,317 on adverts in the same period.

There is currently no info on Mary Lou McDonald's spend, but Lynn Boylan spent €990 during her disappointing European election campaign.
