How much a Christmas dinner will cost in 2020

After one of the most difficult years in recent memory, half of Brits (50%) expect to spend between £5 to £20 per head on Christmas dinner, including alcohol.

The research, conducted by MoneySuperMarket, found that nearly third (30%) expect to spend between £30 to £60 pounds per head, while nearly one in 10 Brits (8%) expect a much larger outlay of between £70 to £100 per head – a level rivalling prices in some Michelin-starred restaurants.

Sally Francis-Miles, money spokesperson at MoneySuperMarket, said: “2020 has been a tough year for many of us, so it’s no surprise that we’re all looking forward to our Christmas dinners, even if it may be a smaller affair this year.

“Half of Brits are keeping their Christmas dinner spend under £20 per head which is more than enough to cover a well-deserved feast. However, one in 10 British families are planning a full gastronomic blowout costing a huge £70 to £100 per head, enough to rival the cost of dinner at some of the best UK restaurants.

“That is reflective of a year of extremes – many have saved £100s working from home in secure jobs while others are facing a tough festive season due to the impact of Covid, meaning paying for a dinner and presents will be a struggle.

"If that’s you, while tradition is wonderful to keep, there’s no harm in cutting some things to save costs. Consider if you need all the trimmings, or could you make do without all the extras that tend to be pushed on us at Christmas time.

"Instead of buying a whole turkey, consider a crown (especially if it’s more than enough to feed your family anyway). Consider shopping at cheaper supermarkets too, and avoid pre-made food – it is often far dearer than making it from scratch, even if it is the easier option for a dinner that isn’t easy to get right timings-wise.”
