How Mohamed Salah proved claims he's a 'diver' and 'cheat' wrong against Porto

Of the many hilariously inaccurate narratives of Liverpool's remarkable season, perhaps the most bizarre is the idea of Mo Salah as a diver. A cheat.

It is true, he went down easily a couple of times earlier in the season, but if ever we needed proof such antics are not instinctive like so many of the top strikers these days, it came at a pivotal moment in this game.

The Egyptian showed real awareness to dart onto a shocking back pass from Otavio, and was through on goal as Felipe lunged desperately to stop him on the edge of the box.

The tackle was late and wild, and the only contact came with the Reds forward not the ball. Salah, inexplicably, rode the challenge, when a 'natural' would have gone down.

Without doubt, had he done so, as last man Felipe would surely have been dismissed. A striker as cute as Harry Kane would have been in no doubt. Sergio Augero too. Yet Salah stayed on his feet and shot wide.

That moment encapsulated his naivety, perhaps. But it also summed up the refreshing approach Liverpool still bring to their game, and their compelling attempt to win a double which would receive far more attention were Manchester City not striving for even more.

Here against Porto they were undoubtedly wide-eyed at times. Two goals up, most teams would close the game down and take a winning lead into the away leg. Yet they kept pushing forward and kept the game madly open.

Against 10 men it would have been infinitely easier, but there is no thought of such things. Jurgen Klopp has always maintained he wants his side to win 'in the right way'; and it seems that means winning with joy...and abandon.

It is as exciting as it is terrifying for their supporters. City's control in recent weeks has been suffocating, yet Liverpool simply don't do control. They do rampage.

They pressed for a third and left themselves open to a Porto response. Many will call it unwise, uncontrolled. But by God, it is exhilarating.
