How Michigan State basketball can land double-bye in Big Ten Tournament

Despite the Spartans’ recent struggles, Michigan State basketball could still land a double-bye in this year’s Big Ten Tournament.

Michigan State enters the final week of the regular season with a chance to finish in the top four of the Big Ten and earn the extremely valuable double-bye in the conference tournament. With Ohio State losing to Maryland on Sunday, the Spartans simply need the following two things to happen to work their way into the top four of the league:

  • Michigan State wins each of their three final games (at Michigan, at Ohio State and home vs. Maryland)
  • Iowa loses one of their final three games (home vs. Northwestern, at Michigan and at Illinois)

While it seems unlikely the Spartans will win all three of their final regular-season games, the opportunity is at least out there for them. The Big Ten Tournament takes place in Indianapolis from March 9 – 13.

Michigan State currently sits in sixth place in the league after losing five of their last seven games. The Spartans are 19-9 overall this year and hold a 10-7 mark in conference play.

There are other ways Michigan State could work their way up the standings but it seems pretty clear that if they win out, there’s a good chance they’ll be in a great position for the double-bye.
