How Mason Greenwood made Manchester United history vs Young Boys

Manchester United academy graduate Mason Greenwood became the first player in the club's rich and colourful history to reach eight goals in competitive European action before the age of 21 with his excellent finish against Young Boys on Wednesday night.

With less than ten minutes on the clock, the 20-year-old, who was one of 11 changes to the starting line-up, fired an acrobatic effort past Young Boys goalkeeper Guillaume Faivre after connecting with Luke Shaw's cross.

It was an outstanding finish from the youngster and one that offered interim manager Ralf Rangnick with a first insight into what he is capable of, as the German continues to learn what each individual within his squad brings to the table.

On what proved to be a relatively underwhelming performance from a much-changed United side in the grand scheme of things, Greenwood was the Reds' most eye-catching performer, pushing himself into the reckoning for a start on Saturday at Norwich City.

As well as giving his new boss something to think about, the Bradford-born goal-getter also cemented his place in United history, becoming the first player in the club's history to reach eight goals in Europe before celebrating his 21st birthday.

Fellow Reds academy graduate Marcus Rashford found the back of the net in European competition seven times before turning 21.

Greenwood, who does not turn 21 until May, struck his first United goal in European action in the UEFA Europa League back in 2019, scoring the winner in a 1-0 triumph over Astana at Old Trafford, before scoring again in the last-16 against LASK in a 5-0 win away from home a few months later.

Greenwood's strike against Young Boys sees him better Rashford's record, who had previously claimed it from United great George Best. Rashford scored four times in the Europa League and three occasions in the Champions League to rack up a tally of seven goals before his 21st birthday.

Greenwood, meanwhile, has scored five times in the Europa League and netted two goals in the Champions League.

Following Wednesday evening's encounter, Rangnick explained what Greenwood has got to do to become a regular starter in the Premier League again.

He said: "It's about continuity, he has to develop physically but technically, for his age, he is a great player.

"My job is to develop him, to make an athlete out of him, and if he manages to do that can be a regular player for this club."
