How Martin Odegaard performed on second Arsenal debut as Emile Smith Rowe rivalry renews

Martin Odegaard gave Mikel Arteta plenty to think about as he made his first appearance as a full-time Arsenal player in the 4-0 win over West Brom on Wednesday.

The Norwegian completed a permanent move from Real Madrid last week after he was left out of Carlo Ancelotti's plans.

Odegaard spent the second half of the season on loan from the Spanish giants, making 20 appearances in total and dislodging Emile Smith Rowe from the starting no. 10 spot and to the left-wing.

Odegaard and Smith Rowe have renewed that rivalry for the spot after the 22-year-old's debut in the Carabao Cup rout of West Brom.

Of course, the Englishman was handed the no. 10 shirt after signing a new contract earlier this summer, strongly suggesting that he would be taking over the mantle left behind by Mesut Ozil.

But now there could be fierce competition for that playmaker role, especially without the extra fixtures that playing in Europe brings.

So how did Odegaard get on in his second debut for the Gunners? Mirror Football takes a closer look.

On a night to remember for Arsenal, Odegaard was somewhat outshone by his stellar team-mates before he was substituted on the hour mark.

The Norway international was handed the ideal chance to show Arteta why he should start over Smith Rowe against Manchester City on Saturday.

And in spite of some moments of real note, Odegaard struggled to make his mark on the game as Arsenal ran riot at The Hawthorns.

He did manage to pull off a truly magnificent assist to set up Bukayo Saka with a wonderful one-two flick, showing a glimpse of what he can bring.

But in general, he struggled somewhat to keep up with the play as the pace of Saka and Nicolas Pepe put Arsenal on the front foot quickly.

In a slower game where Arsenal will have to pick apart defences, Odegaard will shine, as his eye for a pass and fine link-up play will come to the fore.

But this was not really a game that suited him all that well, with speed needed more than technicality to get in behind the West Brom defence.

Over the course of the season and if he does typically start over Smith Rowe, Odegaard will certainly be the one dictating the play for Arsenal.

But he needs time to adapt to playing on a counter-attack and gel with his new team-mates, an advantage Smith Rowe has from pre-season.

Former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell strongly suggested at half-time at Odegaard needed to be doing more to provide more service to Aubameyang, despite his first half double.

When asked for his verdict, Campbell told Sky Sports: "No I’m not happy, I’m pleased that Aubameyang’s got off the mark and I’m pleased Pepe has got off the mark.

"But I’m still seeing fundamental mistakes, Aubameyang needs service and doesn’t really get it and Arsenal get really lucky.

"Aubameyang is the best striker we’ve got and there to put it in but the amount of times he makes runs and doesn’t get the ball, I’d be frustrated and I am."

Campbell did praise Odegaard's passing and composure on the ball though, pointing out his ability to lay the ball on a plate for his team-mates when he manages to get involved.

He said while dissecting Aubameyang's second: "There is a bit of luck there, I think Odegaard makes a difference, the way he just plays the ball so simple but it puts players in good positions.

"But I still think there’s a job to be done, I want Aubameyang to get three or four IF West Brom don’t adjust and play the highline it’s there for him."
