How Mark Wright saved James Argent as he was 'close to death' amid cocaine addiction

James Argent revealed his best friend and former The Only Way is Essex co-star Mark Wright was key in saving is life in December, as he said his cocaine addiction almost cost him his life.

The former TOWIE star has wrestled with his addiction, and an eating disorder, for years, but events spiralled between October and December 2019 when he was "close to death".

The addiction also led to him suffering two near-fatal overdoses, he confirmed.

After girlfriend Gemma Collins called an ambulance to his home in October following more drug use, James admitted he thought that was his lowest point.

But speaking to This Morning hosts Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford on the show on Wednesday, Arg confessed the worst was still to come.

Mark became his pal's guardian angel though, and reached out to save him with James believing he could have died if he wasn't helped then.

Speaking on the show, James told the hosts how Christmas Eve saw him alone and in a very dark place.

While he hoped he could prove to his friends and family that he could get off the drugs and be happy again, he soon hit "rock bottom" on Christmas Day and told his friend he couldn't do it anymore.

Michelle Keegan's husband, and his cousin Elliott Wright, immediately attempted to help Arg - with him crediting them for saving him as he continues his recovery.

James has been on a 10-week rehabilitation programme in Thailand, and is now hoping to be happy again.

He explained of the moment things changed: "Mark is my best friend, alongside his cousin Elliott they are my closest friends.

"Mark has always been there for me through my ups and downs. Like Gemma, Mark is always giving me tough love and throughout the whole of December, he was making phone calls with me and begging me to go to rehab.

"I wasn't ready and I gave up hope. it wasn't until Boxing Day when I rung up Mark and I said, 'Mark I can’t do this anymore'.

"Every time you relapse they get worse and worse, and over December it was the first time I felt like wow, I’m actually close to death. If I don’t get help I could die.

"Mark went out of his way and got in touch with a rehab facility in Thailand. He helped organise it all including the financial side of things.

"He booked my flight, arranged everything. I’m forever grateful for Mark for that. I’m lucky to have friends like that."

Arg spoke out on his addiction honestly for the first time, admitting he was previously "ashamed" and scared of judgement if he'd revealed all.

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
