How many transfers Rangers need to make to mount a serious challenge to Celtic

Rangers need to make three or four quality signings to mount a real title challenge with Celtic next season.

That’s the view of Charlie Adam , who is a keen observer of Scottish football.

The former Ibrox star watched his old team give Celtic a run for their money up until the turn of the year before Brendan Rodgers’ side put their foot down on the accelerator and pulled away.

Adam believes Rangers are getting closer and with Steven Gerrard signing a handful of upgrades, he insists it’ll be game on in the Scottish Premiership.

But he added the caveat that Dermot Desmond may yet blow the Ibrox club away with a either a big-name boss or a star player.

Adam, 33, told BBC Radio 5 Live: “I hope there's a challenge.

“The challenge was up to a point at Christmas where they were level on points and it was going in the right direction. Inconsistencies since then. It cost Rangers getting closer to Celtic.

“Rangers have been on a great run recently and I think if you look at Steven (Gerrard) and how he has done this season, he's done a good job and he's got a good squad, but he'll be looking for better quality next season.

“I don't see Rangers bringing seven or eight players in. I can see them bringing in three or four maximum of better quality players that can take Rangers to the next level again and give Celtic a proper challenge."

Adam feels Celtic majority shareholder Desmond may yet prove the difference in how next season will pan out.

He added: “Going next season, it'll be a totally different game from Rangers. They'll understand how they can play. But with Celtic anything can happen with Dermot Desmond's money.

“He could bring a rabbit out of the hat. They can bring one of the big ones in - whether it'd be a player or manager.

"I think Celtic have a bigger rebuilding job this summer than Rangers.”
