How many times have we landed and walked on the moon?

It has been 50 years since the first humans stepped foot on the Moon.

And in those five decades, not many more people have managed to achieve the incredible feat.

Only 12 people from the United States have managed the historic milestone to land on the Moon as part of the Apollo program.

On July 20 1969, Commander Neil Armstrong walked on the surface for the very first time, shortly followed by Lunar Module Pilot Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin after they, alongside Command Module Pilot Michael Collins, completed the 225,623-mile journey from Earth upon the Apollo 11.

Next up was later that same year when Apollo 12 with Pete Conrad and Alan Bean on board took flight.

Four more people made the trip in 1971 - Alan Shepard and Edgar Mitchell who were part of the Apollo 14 mission and David Scott and James Irwin as part of the Apollo 15 mission.

This was then followed by four more Moon walkers - John Young, Charles Duke, Gene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt - in 1972 in missions Apollo 16 and 17 respectively.

Most of the astronauts who took part came from the military services. Only two out of the 12 were considered civilian NASA astronauts, including Armstrong.

Although only a dozen people have actually walked on the Moon, another 12 have flew to the Moon without landing.

It has been 47 years since anyone else has stepped onto the Moon.
