No. 1 seed Virginia will take on No. 3 seed Texas Tech in the NCAA men’s national championship on Monday night, and in doing so will be chasing history: If they win, it would be the first time a UVA team has ever won a national championship in men’s basketball.
The Cavaliers have made the NCAA tournament 23 times, advancing to the Final Four twice before this year, in 1981 and 1984. They also had six Elite Eight appearances before this year, in 1981, 1983, 1984, 1989, 1995, and 2016.
This is their first appearance in the NCAA title game.
UVA also previously won the NIT championship twice, in 1980 and 1992.
The Virginia women’s basketball team has made three Final Four appearances of their own, in 1990, 1991 and 1992, but have never won a title either.
