How many points Sunderland need from their final games to win automatic promotion

Sunderland need 29 points from their remaining 13 games to reach the number of points usually required to win automatic promotion from League One.

With just 13 games of Sunderland’s season left to go, the Black Cats find themselves fourth in the table, just two points short of the automatic promotion places.

The Black Cats will need to average 2.2 points per game in the remaining fixtures if they want to reach the points totals usually required to secure automatic promotion.

League One champions finished the season with an average of 95.6 points in the last 10 fully completed seasons (between 2009/10 and 2018/19).

That’s 27 points more than Hull have now, with 30 left to play for.

Hull have averaged 1.89 points per game this season, which means they’ll finish on 86 points if they maintain that ratio until the end of the season.

Teams have finished top of League One with fewer points than that over the last decade.

Doncaster Rovers won the league in 2012/13 with just 84 points.

Predict Sunderland's run-in

While it’s nice to win the title, finishing second also gets you automatically promoted, so in the grand scheme of things is just as good.

An average of 89.7 points was enough to secure second place between 09/10 and 18/19.

The fewest of any runners-up was 83 points for Bournemouth in 2012/13, while the most is 96 by Blackburn in 2017/18.
