How many points Ireland need to score to deny England and France the Six Nations title

Ireland now know a win by at least seven points over France, or get a bonus-point victory, to deny England the Six Nations title on Saturday night.

The final game of the 2020 Six Nations is almost upon us and Ireland, England and France are all still harbouring ambitions of becoming champions this year.

England have claimed a bonus-point 34-5 win over Italy in the second fixture of Super Saturday, and now all attention will turn to Stade de France where France host Ireland.

Super Saturday began with Andy Farrell's side in the driving seat on 14 points, one point ahead of rivals France and England, meaning the equation is pretty straightforward for them.

If Ireland can pull off a bonus-point win - a victory combined with scoring four or more tries - against Les Bleus, they will become 2020 Six Nations champions.

If Ireland win without a bonus point, it will come down to points difference with England. They have a points difference deficit of six heading into the game, so a seven-point win is enough to take the trophy to Dublin.

If Ireland win by six points and the points difference is level, the next deciding factor is tries scored. As both Ireland and England have currently scored 14, Andy Farrell’s side need only one try to move clear of England.

If the Irish win by six points without scoring a try, the Championship will be shared.

A draw in Paris would see England win the title.

The Six Nations table heading into France v Ireland: team; points; points difference

  1. England; 18 points; +44
  2. Ireland; 14 points; +38
  3. France; 13 points; +18

What results do France need?

Due to their points difference with England, France must win by 31 points or more - with a bonus point - to lift the Championship.

If France and England finish level on points difference, it’s advantage France under tries scored as England have scored 14, a tally France – currently on 13 – would naturally overhaul should they achieve the bonus point they need.

Anything less than a bonus point win means France can't win the title.

What about England?

If France win without a bonus point, England will claim the title.

Eddie Jones' side now nervously await the result of the final Six Nations fixture of the year as they hope to celebrating winning a first Championship title since 2017.
