How many points do Leeds United need to secure promotion to the Premier League this season?

Leeds United have one goal this season and that is to win promotion to the Premier League.

Having missed out on ending their 15-year absence from the top flight in dramatic circumstances last term, Marcelo Bielsa's side are determined to go one step better this time around.

The Whites are well-positioned too, sitting second in the Championship standings with 13 matches remaining.

United hold a three-point cushion over third-placed Fulham, with Brentford and Nottingham Forest also firmly in the hunt for a top-two finish.

While there are no exact metrics on just how many points Leeds will need to reach the Premier League this season, history can give us a rough indication on the points threshold they will need to meet.

Previous seasons show us that over the last 16 campaigns, the average points tally needed for automatic promotion from the Championship is 87.4.

The Whites currently have 59 points to their name ahead of this weekend's clash at Elland Road with Reading.

As a result, history tells us United need around 28 points from their last 13 matches to secure a place in the top flight for next season.

Roughly speaking, that means Leeds need a further nine wins and a draw, affording them to lose another three matches, based on previous data.

From the reverse fixtures of Leeds' remaining 13 matches, they picked up 26 points, losing to Fulham, Charlton Athletic and Swansea City.

There were also draws with Derby County and Cardiff City, which left them with a two-points-per-game average of 26 from 13 games.

If Bielsa's side can muster up an extra win this time around and, given the manner in which they dropped points to Swansea, Derby and Cardiff, that is more than realistic, they will find themselves rather unfortunate to not be sat in second place after 46 matches.
