The dream Champions League scenario facing Chelsea and Frank Lampard ahead of Liverpool clash

Chelsea could be hours away from sealing a top-four finish in the Premier League.

Despite not being in league action last weekend, the Blues were given a huge help in hand by London rivals Tottenham Hotspur who beat Leicester City 3-0 on Sunday afternoon.

This means Frank Lampard's side are in a great position to qualify for next season's Champions League as they are hot favourites to take one of the two final top-four spots up for grabs.

Frank Lampard focused on Chelsea's 'number one goal' of a Champions League place

Manchester City's two-year ban from the Champions League has successfully been appealed, so fifth-place will no longer come with a spot Europe's top tier competition next season.

As a result, the battle for a top-four finish will be concluded during the final week of the season.

Chelsea have amassed 63 points after 36 games after their victory over Norwich City eight days ago which also ensured the Blues confirmed their place as London's best team for the 2019/20 campaign.

Leicester's collapse in form since the turn of the year means they are fourth, ahead of United on goal difference on 62 points and have played a game more.

So what does this all mean for Chelsea, Lampard, and the top-four battle?

Well, the maximum number of points United can get is 68, for Leicester, it is now 65 after losing to Spurs - and the pair meet on the final day of the season which should benefit the Blues.

Lampard's side can achieve a maximum of 69 points. However, with games against Liverpool and Wolves to come as well as the Leicester vs Man United clash, 63 points could be enough for a top-four finish.

But, to control their own destiny, 66 points will be enough to seal yet another top-four finish and they can reach that total with a game to spare by winning at Anfield tonight.

Furthermore, two straight wins to end the season would also be the dream scenario to get third.

In addition, if reports are to be believed, Champions League qualification is also key to sealing a deal for Bayer Leverkusen wonderkid Kai Havertz in the summer transfer window.

German publication Bild, via the Metro, claimed last month that Havertz is open to the idea of sealing a move to Stamford Bridge, but only as long as they have secured Champions League football for next season.

And according to the Athletic, Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia is close to working her transfer magic once again by securing a deal for Havertz at a lower price than many would have expected.
