How many players take a penalty kick and when did England last win a shootout?

England vs Italy in the Euro 2020 final has ended in a draw after extra time.

And it means one thing - a dreaded penalty shootout.

Despite a bright start from England - with Luke Shaw scoring in the opening minutes - the game ended in stalemate after Leonardo Bonucci equalised in the second half.

With neither team managing to score in extra time the game is now going to penalties.

England and Italy will now take turns shooting at goal from the penalty spot against the opposition goalkeeper.

Each team has five penalty kicks which must be taken by different players. The team that scores more penalties is the winner.

If the score remains level after the first five penalties then it will go into sudden death. This means each team must take it in turns to take another penalty and must score.

While many people will remember Gareth's Southgate's miss 25 years ago against the Germans in the semi-final of Euro 96, England did win a shootout three years ago.

They beat Colombia 4-3 in penalties to reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup in 2018.

However the last time England faced Italy in a shootout was in the quarter final of Euro 2012. England lost the shootout 4-2.
