A total of 156 players are competing in this year's PGA Championship at Quail Hollow in what is widely regarded as the strongest field in the game.
Even with that, some elements are working in the players' favor. Heavy rain earlier in the week inevitably means softer conditions and the chance of low scores, albeit favoring the big hitters as the course plays longer. Meanwhile, one man who doesn't need any lessons on tackling the course, four-time Quail Hollow winner Rory McIlroy, isn't even sure it is set up that differently from the occasions he has played it on the PGA Tour

He said in the build-up: "I thought it was going to feel different just because it was a Major championship, and I got out on the golf course yesterday, and it felt no different than last year at the Wells Fargo. The rough is maybe a little juicier. But fairways are still the same cut lines and same visuals. It doesn't feel that much different."
Despite those factors, it's hardly likely players will have it easy. After all, this is still a Major, which brings its own pressures as each member of the field tries to etch their name in the history books. Therefore, as ever, there will be fierce competition to make it above the cut line. But how many players will have a part to play in all four days of the tournament?

What is the cut at the PGA Championship?
The top 70 and ties from the 156-man field will make it beyond the 36-hole stage at Quail Hollow.
At Valhalla in 2024, 78 players reached the weekend, with Jon Rahm one of the big names to miss out. On that occasion, soft and calm conditions led to remarkably low scoring for the field, with the cut line set at one-under, the lowest in PGA Championship history. That was a marked contrast to 2023, when the cut fell at five-over, while it was four-over in 2022.
At a regular PGA Tour event, the top 65 and ties after 36 holes advance to the weekend. As for the other Majors, it's only the top 50 and ties that make the cut at The Masters, while it's the low 60 and ties that progress through to the weekend at the US Open.
