How many people have recovered from coronavirus?

Cases of coronavirus are continuing to rise across the globe - but half of those infected have already recovered, according to official statistics.

While new confirmed cases and deaths are announced each day, official figures on the number of people who recovered from Covid-19 are harder to come by.

Some countries are publishing the number of people recovering alongside the numbers of people contracting the virus and the relatively small number of people dying.

Both China and Italy, the worst affected countries, have been releasing the number of recovered patients as part of a daily update on numbers - but not all countries do.

In the UK, health officials have not given an update on the number of patients who have recovered for over a week.

On March 5, Professor Chris Whitty revealed that 18 people in the UK who have contracted coronavirus had made a full recovery.

But with the total number of UK patients now at around 800, nearly 450 more than the total just one week ago, the number of recovered patients is also expected to have increased.

The M.E.N. has asked the Department of Health for an updated figure - but one had not been provided at the time of writing.

According to worldometer, a website tracking the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in each country, around 50 per cent of confirmed cases are now recovered cases.

That number is likely to be higher in reality as not all countries are keeping a tally of the number of patients who have recovered from coronavirus.

As of March 13, the total number of cases recorded globally is around 138,500 - and nearly 81,000 of those (58.5 per cent) are in China.

China has now reported that more than 64,000 of its coronavirus patients have recovered, around 13,500 cases are still active and more than 3,000 have died.

That means that around 79 per cent of cases in China have recovered, while four per cent have died.

Outside of China, the worst-hit country is Italy.

Italy's total number of cases is 15,113 - which accounts for around 11 per cent of the total number of global cases.

In Italy, 12,839 cases remain active, while 1,258 patients have recovered and 1,016 patients have died.

That means that so far 8.3 percent of patients have recovered, while 6.7 per cent have died.

The figures in this article are correct at the time of writing, but it is worth noting that they are likely to change rapidly.
