How many horses died at the 2021 Grand National?

The 2021 Grand National took place at Aintree yesterday.

Rachael Blackmore created history by becoming the first female jockey to win the race on Minella Times.

Unfortunately, one of the 40 runners had to be put down.

The Long Mile was euthanised after suffering an injury between fences.

Trained by Philip Dempsey and owned by JP McManus, the horse was pulled up late in the race by jockey Luke Dempsey.

It is the 13th time that a horse has had to be put down at the world's biggest steeplechase since 2000 and it's the second consecutive year that a horse has lost its life in the race after Up For Review died in 2019. The race was cancelled last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Jockey Bryony Frost was also taken to hospital after being unseated from her horse Yala Enki. Of the 40 horses that started the race, only 15 finished, with four falling and a further four unseating their rider.

The fatality sparked fresh calls for the sport to be banned.

Animal Aid director Iain Green said: "It’s high time that this repulsive spectacle was banned.

"Despite the racing authorities and TV commentators attempting to brush this carnage and loss of life under the carpet, the public will turn their backs on this industry that treats horses as if they were mere objects, to be exploited for money and run into the ground."
