Suspended defensive end David Irving remains away from the Dallas Cowboys to take care of ongoing issues that include substance abuse.
He did not report to training camp and is not expected back with the team Oct. 1, following a four-game suspension to start the season for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy.
Irving is working out at an MMA facility owned by Fox Sports reporter Jay Glazer.
On Friday night, however, went on a rant on Instagram in response to a fan criticizing him for his drug use.
Irving went off on the NFL's substance abuse policy, while acknowledging he was "medicated" by marijuana in every game he's played in the league.
Here is part of Irving's rant:
"Check this, y'all wanna judge n say what's right or wrong. These guys prescribe me Xanax bars , ambient , and painkillers , some of us , like myself have been smoking weed since 12. Never been in trouble w the law. Always had a 3.0 or higher too. It's natural , I'd much rather smoke weed than take all that lab made (expletive) ... The nfl laws on weed are [expletive] n we all know it. I'm from Cali. I've had my medical card. It's nothing wrong with it. Also. Every game you seen me play in , I was medicated. I don't see you or any of my coaches or previous coaches complaining about my play."
Irving said he will stop using weed because it's the right thing to do for his family.
"No matter how [expletive] up the rules are, I have to follow them," Irving said.
He said he will be back in Week 5 and won't disappoint.
Irving is eligible to return Oct. 1. He will miss games against the Carolina Panthers, New York Giants, Seattle Seahawks and Detroit Lions.
