How many fouls do you need to foul out in college basketball?

The NCAA national championship is being played on Monday evening between Virginia and Texas Tech, and the game will undoubtedly be a close one as two of the toughest defensive teams in the country square off.

For those watching at home who don’t watch a ton of college basketball, there may be some questions about the rules of the game, especially when it comes to fouls.

So let us answer the question: How many fouls are needed to foul out in a college basketball game?

Unlike the NBA, which requires six fouls to foul out, college basketball players are asked to leave the game when they have earned five personal fouls.

This has to do with the rules of basketball and the length of college games. NBA games are 48 minutes long, and games of that length are designated to allow six fouls before a player is ejected.

In college basketball, the game is only 40 minutes long, so players are only granted five fouls before they are ejected from the game.
