How many episodes will Doctor Who season 13 have?

The moment Doctor Who fans have been waiting for is not far away, with the BBC's classic sci-fi show due to return to the small screen soon.

Season 13 is sadly due to be Jodie Whittaker's finale as the Doctor, with her and showrunner exec producer Chris Chibnall set to leave the show at the end of the series.

Doctor Who is currently the longest-running sci-fi show in history, having had its first episode air back in 1963.

Plenty of notable actors have played the role over the years, with William Hartnell, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker and Sylvester McCoy among those starring in the shows original run and Christopher Ecclestone, David Tennant, Matt Smith, and Peter Capaldi all taking over since the 2005 reboot.

When Jodie Whittaker took over in 2017, she made history as the show's first female Doctor.

In July, season 13's trailer was first shown during a virtual event (featuring the cast) for Comic-Con.

How many episodes will Doctor Who season 13 have?

Season 13 will comprise of six episodes and three specials, with the synopsis promising an action-packed storyline.

The episodes will be serialised in a break from Doctor Who's usual format of stand-alone stories.

The show was initially announced as eight episodes long with two specials, but this has now been revised.

The series is promising to make a dramatic return, with the official synopsis telling us that "Series 13 is set to introduce some terrifying new adversaries and the return of truly iconic old enemies. Expect action, fun, scares, extraordinary new worlds as the Doctor and her friends confront a deadly evil…"

John Bishop will be joining the cast as Dan Lewis, with Jacob Anderson (previously seen on Game of Thrones) having a regular part as Vinder, a role he's described as "one of my favourite people I've ever played".

Parts of the show have been spotted being filmed in Bristol.

When is the Doctor Who season 13 release date?

Doctor Who season 13 will be on screens in the autumn of 2021. The subsequent trio of specials will begin on New Year's Day, with the next episode due in the spring of 2022.
