How Manchester United target Matthijs de Ligt responded to Barcelona transfer question

Matthijs de Ligt gave little away about his future after he was asked about the possibility of him joining Barcelona.

Ajax's teenage captain was stopped by a young Barcelona supporter during his holiday in Miami and the fan asked him whether he would be signing for the Blaugrana this summer.

"I asked him if he would come to Barca, and he just laughed," the fan said.

Paris Saint-Germain appear to have emerged as the front-runners to sign De Ligt, with widespread reports circulating last week that the French champions have tabled by far the best contract offer to the 19-year-old.

It was the MEN's understanding in May that Barcelona was De Ligt's most likely destination but the money on offer in Paris could prove too much for him to turn down.

United like De Ligt but their chances of attracting him to Old Trafford were dealt a huge blow when they failed to qualify for the Champions League.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is eyeing an addition in the centre of United's defence this summer and Leicester's Harry Maguire appears to be high up on the club's list of targets.

Meanwhile, United remain hopeful of signing Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace, despite seeing their initial £40million bid for the young right-back turned down.

United are planning to make an improved offer for Wan-Bissaka but it is not clear whether Palace are willing to budge from their £60million asking price for him.

The 21-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough 2018-19 season at Palace, playing 39 times.
