AZ Alkmaar defender Ron Vlaar was surprised by Manchester United's lack of intensity in the Europa League on Thursday night.
United delivered a dour performance at the Kyocera Stadium as they drew 0-0 with Alkmaar to move joint-top of Group L alongside FK Partizan.
"During my time at Aston Villa I played against better Manchester United teams than this one, although they didn't play with their best starting XI," former Aston Villa centre-back Vlaar said.
"In the Premier League they play with high intensity, which I experienced myself, but United didn't show that today.
"I even think they were the ones who had to cope with our intensity, and that is a great compliment to us."
In his four Premier League meetings with United, Vlaar tasted defeat on three occasions with Villa, as well as one draw during the 2014-15 campaign.
United's return game against Alkmaar takes place at Old Trafford on December 12.
