How Manchester United signing Daniel James surprised teammate

Daniel James has surprised many people following his summer move to Manchester United.

Expectations were low when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side spent £15m to sign the Wales international from Swansea, but three months into the new season and he is now undroppabale.

A dream debut goal against Chelsea set the tone for James to make his mark at Old Trafford with his blistering pace proving to be a huge asset to United.

However, the 22-year-old has not always been renowned for his agile wing play and lightning speed when playing on the break.

Fellow Wales international Connor Roberts has been close to James following their emergence at Swansea, and he admits he was amazed by how fast the United winger actually was.

"My first thoughts were, ‘You wouldn’t think he is as quick as he is.’ I thought he was a funny little fat kid," Roberts told  The Athletic.

"He had the pace — that’s what he thrives on. We always used to joke that he’s the fastest chubby kid we’ve ever seen.

"In recent years, he has got more toned but when he first came, he almost had a little bit of a belly on him. I was like, ‘Well, he can’t be that fast.’ But obviously he is.

"He is a proper professional. Nights before games, he was on the foam roller, stretching, getting himself ready."
