How Manchester United signing Amad Diallo played on Champions League debut for Atalanta

Manchester United signing Amad Diallo made his Champions League debut during Atalanta's draw with FC Midtjylland on Tuesday.

The 18-year-old sealed a move to Old Trafford in the summer transfer window and will move to England in January. MEN Sport understand United are still in the process of securing a work permit for the Ivory Coast winger.

Diallo ended an 11-month wait for his fourth Serie A appearance last week when he came off the bench during Atalanta's 2-0 defeat against Verona - his first league appearance since his move to United was announced.

United fans were delighted with the youngster's cameo and Diallo was rewarded with a Champions League debut in Atalanta's draw with their Danish group opponents on Tuesday.

Liverpool's win at home to Ajax boosted Atalanta's chances of securing passage to the knockout stages of the competition, sitting one point above the Dutch giants heading into a crucial game on matchday six.

Diallo replaced Luis Muriel in the 68th minute to make his first appearance in Europe's elite club competition. Though primarily used on the right wing, the youngster was deployed on the left by manager Gian Piero Gasperini.

The youngster managed two shots on target during his brief cameo, making an excellent run cutting inside from the left in the 75th minute but was denied by the goalkeeper while being pursued by a defender. He showcased his willingness to test the goalkeeper just three minutes later, jinking inside with a quick stepover before shooting on his right but his effort was parried by Midtjylland 'keeper Jesper Hansen.

Diallo was tidy in possession, completing nine out of ten passes while on the field. He also completed the one dribble he attempted during his debut. The youngster completed one progressive run, breaking at speed during a counter-attack led by Duvan Zapata, showcasing his blistering pace that will definitely be an asset to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Gasperini highlighted the impact of fatigue on his squad following the draw.

"The fact of playing every week in the Champions League and in between taking the field in the league certainly takes away the possibility of recovering physical and nervous energy.

"It is not easy to play with this continuity in the Champions League. In the league, it is clear that there are teams that have a regular week compared to us and therefore struggle less."

Diallo could make a further six appearances for Atalanta provided United arrange his transfer to take place at the start of January.
