How Manchester United should line up vs Liverpool FC in Premier League fixture

Manchester United will be looking to stretch their lead at the top of the Premier League as they travel to face Liverpool at Anfield this weekend.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side climbed to first place with victory over Burnley in midweek and could extend their lead if they win on Sunday afternoon.

United are winless in their last four Premier League games against Liverpool (D2 L2), their longest run without a win against their rivals since a run of five between March 2000 and January 2002.

In terms of early team news, Amad Diallo could be in line for a role in the matchday squad but Phil Jones and Brandon Williams have both been ruled out.

Here is how MEN writers think United should line up.

It is all about the result for United at Anfield this weekend, but Solskjaer would be wise to stick with his tried and tested set-up, even if a more defensive option is available.

United switched to three at the back for most big matches last season, however the current back-four are all playing well and deserve a chance against the very best in Europe.

Matic would be an understandable selection in midfield but Fred and McTominay remain unrivalled as a partnership, while Pogba is better on the left rather than in a diamond.

Rashford on the wing, but I'd pick Martial over Cavani if fit, simply because of his pace against a back line which has licence to push up.

Solskjaer has a few tactical options for Sunday, such as switching to a back three or going for a diamond midfield, but the 4-2-3-1 has worked well recently and he should stick with it.

There might be a temptation to bring Lindelof back in defence, but the Bailly and Maguire partnership has worked well of late and it deserves to get its toughest test yet. The full-backs pick themselves at the moment.

In midfield the drive and energy of Fred and McTominay are a must at Anfield, while Fernandes is the first name on the teamsheet. Pogba's form means he should start as well, however, and the easiest solution may be a left-wing role for the World Cup winner. Rashford and Cavani can complete the front three.
