How Manchester United's loan players performed

Manchester United loanee Chris Smalling helped Roma keep their second clean sheet of the season in a 1-0 win at Lecce.

Smalling, 29, played the full 90 minutes for the second time in a week as Roma recovered from their midweek home defeat by Atalanta. Edin Dzeko scored the only goal at the Via del Mare to send Roma up to sixth in Serie A.

Alexis Sanchez finally started for Inter Milan and scored two-thirds as many league goals as he did for United before he was sent off in their 3-1 victory at Sampdoria. Inter are the only Serie A side with a 100 per cent record but Sanchez is suspended for the top-of-the-table encounter with Juventus on Sunday.

Dean Henderson's howler gifted Liverpool a 1-0 win at Sheffield United. On his Instagram page, The 22-year-old said: "Got my head held high. Can’t wait to get back out there!! I always come back stronger, thanks for your support Bladesmen."

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder was scathing in his assessment of Henderson's performance at Bramall Lane, where Liverpool were held for 70 minutes. "If he wants to be a professional footballer, these things are going to happen," Wilder explained.

"But if he wants to play for the top teams, if he wants to play for England then he needs to do better, he needs to concentrate more.

"It’s a disappointing day for him. I am not going to put my arms around him. Simply, he needs to do better."

Joel Pereira, 23, kept his first clean sheet for Hearts in their goalless draw at St Mirren, as did 19-year-old Alex Fojticek in Stalybridge Celtic's 1-0 win at Witton Albion in the Northern Premier League Premier Division. Fellow 'keeper Kieran O'Hara, 23, had a weekend off with League One Burton, who entertain Everton's Under-21s in the EFL Cup on Tuesday.

Ethan Hamilton, 20, completed 82 minutes but Southend lost again at home to Accrington Stanley and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, 22, was not in the Tranmere squad for their 4-1 shellacking at Ipswich.

George Tanner, 19, made his 10th start for Morecambe in their League Two draw with Northampton and Aidan Barlow, also 19, started for Tromso at Bodo/Glimt.
