How Manchester United plan to create Old Trafford atmosphere with no fans

Manchester United have revealed plans to create an atmosphere at Old Trafford during behind-closed-doors games.

Fans will be barred from grounds in a bid to limit the spread of coronavirus, meaning Premier League clubs will play matches in empty stadiums until restrictions are lifted.

United plan to counter that by inviting supporters to part of a giant mosaic of faces at the Theatre of Dreams.

Top-flight clubs have been in talks with broadcasters over plans to enhance the viewing experience for television audiences, with ideas such as artificial crowd noise and dressing room cameras discussed. Sources said nothing was off the table during negotiations.

United have held their own internal consultations to enhance the atmosphere at Old Trafford, asking staff to come up with suggestions.

They have now asked fans to send photos via the club’s app to create the mosaic in time for their first home game after the restart - against Sheffield United on June 24.

In a statement United said: "We know that nothing can replace the roar of the Old Trafford crowd as a packed stadium filled with thousands of Reds gets behind the team.

"We’ll still be working to make an empty Old Trafford look amazing for the team and for the millions watching at home, including an incredible mosaic image featuring our loyal fans.

"We’ll use the images to create a mosaic of our fans from across the globe to inspire the players during our home matches until real crowds return.

The image will then be stored at our museum, to remember this unprecedented time when football had to temporarily be without the fans that make it so special."
