How Manchester United beat Man City with their counter attack tactic

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says counter-attacking is part of Manchester United's identity and should not be viewed as a negative.

United forced Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson into three saves, scored twice and hit the woodwork inside the first 30 minutes of their 2-1 Manchester derby triumph at the Etihad Stadium.

Counter-attacking has become a hallmark of Solskjaer's reign as United manager and they went from bottom to top for 'fast breaks' within six months of his caretaker appointment last December.

United ruthlessly exposed City's makeshift defence with a front four of Daniel James, Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial, with the latter two claiming the goals.

"We've worked on them ever since I came because that's Man United," Solskjaer said. "You can call it counter-attacking, it sounds very negative, really.

"For me it's quick, attacking, flowing football with the right intent and when we win it, there's no use of keeping it back to the 'keeper if the chances are there to play through them and we did.

"Some great intent of passing forward and we've got players playing with pace and quality and skill, and I wouldn't want James, Lingard or Rashford running at me. So we knew that was a chance for us to create chances and we did today, and many of them, plenty of them."

Solskjaer and Pep Guardiola were seen embracing during the second-half with United still 2-0 up. Guardiola appeared to take umbrage with something Solskjaer said to fourth official Mike Dean but the pair soon clasped hands and the City coach then embraced Solskjaer.

"You've got to have fun when you have got these games," Solskjaer added. "For me, he's the best coach in the world, best manager in the world, I've admired him since he took over at Barcelona and I can only say again they are the best team in the league.

"The way he gets them playing, they give us problems from every angle and he's done that with all the teams he's had. I'll always look up to him, read his books, to put it that way!"
