How Man Utd’s attacking quartet are doing what Solskjaer, Yorke, Cole and Sheringham couldn’t

Finally, under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Manchester United have rediscovered their swagger and the Red Devils are now once again a deadly threat in attack.

The Norwegian is getting the best out of his plethora of attacking talent and for only the second time in their history, United have had four players reach double figures in goals in one season.

Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial both netted their 10th league goals of the campaign recently, with Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku having already netted 10 each.

This means United’s newest attacking quartet have achieved something Solskjaer and his old team mates couldn’t do, back when the current United manager played for the Red Devils.

Solskjaer was among a formidable attack of Dwight Yorke, Andy Cole and Teddy Sheringham and despite their prolific individual numbers, none of them reached double figures in the same season.

The quartet came very close, for example in the 1998/99 season, when United won the treble, Solskjaer (12), Yorke (18) and Cole (17) all netted more than 10, but Sheringham only scored two.

In the 2000/2001 campaign, they came close again as Sheringham hit form with 15 goals, Solskjaer scored 10 however Yorke and Cole only managed nine each.

More interestingly, Solskjaer was the only player to reach double figures in each of the three seasons the quartet played together.

This shows how consistent and reliable the United boss was in his playing days and United’s fans will be hoping he can transcend sustainable success into management for the seasons to come.

In a press conference, Solskjaer revealed his surprise that United had four players reach double figures for the first time in 27 years:

"I'm surprised that it's so long ago because I thought maybe me, and Teddy, Coley and Yorkie had more than that.

"To have more sources of goals, that gives the opposition a different challenge. They know goals could come from different angles and we still have a few more that can challenge and should get to double figures really," he said.
